Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
